WHEREAS, the Galax High School football team won the Virginia High School League Class 1 state championship in 2023; and
WHEREAS, the Galax High School Maroon Tide defeated the Essex High School Trojans in a defensive struggle that finished with a score of 7–6; and
WHEREAS, the Essex Trojans scored the first and only touchdown of the game, but made a critical error and missed their two-point conversion attempt; the Galax Maroon Tide responded by pinning the Essex Trojans in their own end zone and forcing a fumble for a safety; and
WHEREAS, Tehdrun Tucker narrowed the lead again with a second safety, then put the Galax Maroon Tide within field goal range after a big run on the team's final drive of the game; and
WHEREAS, freshman kicker Yandel Vera scored the game-winner in dramatic fashion, kicking a 42-yard field goal that hit the crossbar but toppled over the goal posts to give the Galax Maroon Tide the victory; and
WHEREAS, the successful season is a tribute to the hard work and determination of all the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of coaches and staff, and the passionate support of the entire Galax High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Galax High School football team hereby be commended on winning the 2023 Virginia High School League Class 1 state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Shane Allen, head coach of the Galax High School football team, as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the team's achievements and best wishes for the future.
