WHEREAS, Joe Agee, an outstanding athlete, coach, and professor at The College of William & Mary who was honored with the Alumni Medallion in 2012, made many valuable and lasting contributions to the College and the community during nearly a half century of service; and WHEREAS, Joe Agee first enrolled at The College of William & Mary's Norfolk Division, now known as Old Dominion University, and earned a bachelor's degree from the Williamsburg campus in 1952; and WHEREAS, a talented and versatile athlete, Joe Agee was a member of The College of William & Mary's basketball team in 1951 and 1952, and played for the Tribe in 55 games; and WHEREAS, Joe Agee also played baseball for the Tribe and was offered a contract to play baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates; he received a draft notice from the United States Army and accepted a commission in the United States Marine Corps instead of pursuing a career in baseball; and WHEREAS, in 1953, Joe Agee joined the Marines and proudly served his country on active duty in Korea; when his military service was over, he returned to The College of William & Mary and earned a master's degree in 1956; and WHEREAS, Joe Agee's teaching career at The College of William & Mary began in 1958; he taught history, health, and physical education in the early years, and later taught kinesiology courses; and WHEREAS, many students knew and respected Joe Agee as a dedicated and talented coach; over the years, he was coach of The College of William & Mary's varsity basketball, baseball, football, golf, and soccer programs; and WHEREAS, Joe Agee was head golf coach for 35 years for the Tribe, and he led The College of William & Mary to its first NCAA regional berth in 1991, returning to the tournament in 1994; he also guided the Tribe to the 1982 Virginia state championship and the 1985 Colonial Athletic Association crown; and WHEREAS, in recognition of Joe Agee's many contributions to The College of William & Mary and its athletic program, including serving as executive director of the W&M Athletic Foundation, the home dugout at Plumeri Park is named in his honor, and the golf team sponsors the annual Joe Agee Invitational golf tournament; and WHEREAS, in 2009, Joe Agee and his wife, Eloise, were the grand marshals at The College of William & Mary's annual homecoming parade, and in 2012, he was honored with the Alumni Medallion, the highest award the William & Mary Alumni Association can bestow on an alumnus; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Joe Agee, an outstanding professor, athlete, and coach at The College of William & Mary, hereby be commended for his many contributions to the college and the community; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Joe Agee as an expression of the House of Delegates' congratulations and admiration for his dedication and service to The College of William & Mary. |
