HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 131
Commending the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 18, 2013

WHEREAS, in 2012 the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department celebrated the 100th anniversary of its establishment in 1912; and

WHEREAS, founded on January 16, 1912, the Dublin Fire Company elected L. T. Dudley as its first fire chief; previously, the Town of Dublin used the bucket brigade system to fight fires by carrying water from local wells and cisterns; and

WHEREAS, in 1943, under fire chief Sam Wilson, the Dublin Fire Company acquired new equipment and was reorganized as the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department; and

WHEREAS, in 1949 the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department increased its capabilities to serve the community by acquiring the department's first fire truck and first fire station; and

WHEREAS, elected as fire chief in 1954, R. S. Cecil spent the next three decades enhancing the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department; under his leadership, the department purchased new vehicles and funded the construction of the department's current fire station; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Dublin hired its first part-time firefighter in 1978; over the next several years, the department continued to improve by building additions to the fire station; and

WHEREAS, the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department instituted a bi-annual motorcycle fundraiser under fire chief Robert D. Cecil, earning the department enough money to purchase additional new equipment; and

WHEREAS, current fire chief Ronald McClure, elected in 2002 and again in 2004, has guided the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department and continued the department's tradition of excellence; and

WHEREAS, the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department is an integral part of the Town of Dublin's history, existing for nearly as long as the town since its reincorporation in 1906; in 2012 the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department responded to 326 calls in the town; and

WHEREAS, the highly skilled firefighters of the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department have displayed the utmost professionalism in their mission to keep the residents of the Town of Dublin safe; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department hereby be commended on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the department's diligent service to the community.
