HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 121
Commending the George Washington Hotel.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 19, 2024
 

WHEREAS, the George Washington Hotel, a historic property in downtown Winchester currently managed by Wyndham Hotels, has served residents of and visitors to the Shenandoah Valley for 100 years; and

WHEREAS, established in 1924, the George Washington Hotel was built by the American Hotel Company as part of its colonial collection and was situated near a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad station to provide a convenient lodging for passengers; and

WHEREAS, the original George Washington Hotel featured 102 rooms, as well as a barber shop, cafeteria, candy shop, and men's furnishing shop on the ground floor; an annex in 1929 provided an additional 50 rooms, and the hotel was later remodeled to include a Howard Johnson's restaurant; and

WHEREAS, the George Washington Hotel hosted several notable guests, including actress and comedienne Lucille Ball and professional boxer Jack Dempsey; and

WHEREAS, when business slowed with the decline of railroad travel, the George Washington Hotel closed in 1978, but later served the local community as a retirement home, the George Washington Home for Adults, until 1993; and

WHEREAS, currently operating as The George Washington—A Wyndham Grand Hotel, the George Washington Hotel was purchased and renovated in 2004 and reopened in 2008; and

WHEREAS, notable for its Colonial Revival and Neoclassical Revival architecture, the George Washington Hotel is also one of the tallest buildings in Winchester; it was added to the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places in 2010; and

WHEREAS, the George Washington Hotel will commemorate its 100th anniversary year with a concert series between April and October 2024 featuring Orleans, John Ford Coley, and Firefall; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the George Washington Hotel hereby be commended on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the George Washington Hotel as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the hotel's storied history and contributions to the Winchester community.
