HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 112
Celebrating the life of Elmore Whitehurst.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 11, 2013

WHEREAS, Elmore Whitehurst, a master firefighter with the City of Richmond who also served as a volunteer firefighter with the Providence Forge Volunteer Rescue Squad and New Kent Fire-Rescue, died on August 2, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Elmore "Elmo" Whitehurst dedicated his life to serving others, first as a member of the United States Coast Guard for four years and then as a firefighter with the City of Richmond's Department of Fire and Emergency Services; and

WHEREAS, a highly trained and dedicated firefighter, Elmo Whitehurst battled a wide variety of fires over the course of his 31-year career, provided important fire safety information to the public, and mentored new firefighters; and

WHEREAS, a beloved member of Fire Station 8 for 18 years, Elmo Whitehurst brought an enthusiastic spirit and commitment to his job that made him popular with his fellow firefighters and a trusted leader; and

WHEREAS, Elmo Whitehurst eagerly shared his expertise and training with new firefighters and proved to be a valuable asset to the Providence Forge Volunteer Rescue Squad and New Kent Fire-Rescue; and

WHEREAS, Elmo Whitehurst made many significant contributions to firefighting efforts over the years, helping protect the lives and property of local residents while helping train a rising generation of firefighters; and

WHEREAS, in his free time, Elmo Whitehurst enjoyed fishing, metalworking, and motorcycling with his fellow firefighters, particularly at Bike Week; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Elmo Whitehurst will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife of 38 years, Dorothy; children, Stacy, Tina, and Bubba, and their families; numerous other family members and friends; and fellow firefighters; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated firefighter, Elmore Whitehurst; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Elmore Whitehurst as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
