WHEREAS, W. Canova Peterson IV, an honorable veteran, accomplished architect, and esteemed public servant, has greatly served the Hanover County community for several years as a member of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from Oak Ridge High School in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Canova Peterson earned a bachelor's degree in architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University's School of Architecture in 1968; and
WHEREAS, that same year, Canova Peterson went on active duty as a second lieutenant in the United States Army, serving his country with honor and distinction until 1970, during which time he earned a Bronze Star for his heroism in the Vietnam War and a promotion to first lieutenant; and
WHEREAS, Canova Peterson ultimately settled in Mechanicsville in 1973 and worked for architecture firms in Richmond before founding his own firm, Canova Associates Architecture, in 1979; and
WHEREAS, as a licensed architect with a certification from the National Council of Architecture Registration Boards and membership with a number of professional associations, Canova Peterson has upheld the highest standards of the architecture profession throughout his career while working tirelessly to advance his field; and
WHEREAS, Canova Peterson has given generously of his time through leadership positions with and as a member of several local organizations, including Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center, Covenant Woods continuing care retirement community in Mechanicsville, and the Hanover County Rotary Club, where he served as president; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his service to the community, Canova Peterson was named Rotarian of the Year by the Hanover County Rotary Club for 2007–2008; and
WHEREAS, Canova Peterson proudly and ably served his constituents from 2012–2023 as a member of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, during which time he served on multiple occasions as the board's chair and vice chair; and
WHEREAS, Canova Peterson's government service also included roles with the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission, the Richmond Regional Transportation Planning Organization, and the Virginia Association of Counties' board of directors for Region 3; and
WHEREAS, through his steadfast dedication and commitment to serving others, Canova Peterson has helped to make Hanover County a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That W. Canova Peterson IV hereby be commended for his service on the Hanover County Board of Supervisors; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to W. Canova Peterson IV as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for his contributions to Hanover County and the Commonwealth.
