HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 106
Commending Louise Thornton.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 5, 2016

WHEREAS, for 50 years, Louise Thornton has been an outstanding teacher in the Prince George County Public Schools and an inspiration to those around her, dedicating her life to educating young people about American government and their civic responsibilities; and

WHEREAS, Louise Thornton was reared in Sussex County and earned a bachelor's degree in 1966 from The College of William and Mary; she decided to follow her mother and become a teacher, and after she graduated, she started work in the Prince George County Public School system; and

WHEREAS, Louise Thornton returned to her alma mater in 1968 - 1969 and earned a master's degree; she later earned a second graduate degree from the University of Richmond; and

WHEREAS, in 1966 - 1967, during her first year in the classroom, Louise Thornton taught history in middle school; she then moved to Prince George High School the following year and has spent her entire teaching career at the county's high school; and

WHEREAS, in the last five decades, Louise Thornton has taught more than 6,000 students; she teaches U.S. government, and to date, she has guided her students through 13 presidential election cycles; and

WHEREAS, Louise Thornton has attended numerous campaign rallies and political conventions over the years, enthusiastically incorporating what she has learned into classroom discussions with her students; and

WHEREAS, Louise Thornton has helped students at Prince George High School in many ways; she started an Advanced Placement government and politics course and also sponsors the Prince George Model United Nations Club; and

WHEREAS, additionally, Louise Thornton chairs the Social Studies Department at Prince George High School and has served on several influential committees in the school system; her commitment to education is an inspiration to her colleagues—some of whom were once her students; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Louise Thornton, an admired and esteemed teacher for the Prince George County Public Schools for 50 years, hereby be commended for her tireless work on behalf of her students and her commitment to teaching; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Louise Thornton as an expression of the House of Delegates' congratulations and admiration for her dedication to public education and for encouraging young people to become informed and responsible citizens of the Commonwealth.
