HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 85 Commending the McLean High School softball team.   Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 29, 2024 Agreed to by the Senate, February 1, 2024  

WHEREAS, the McLean High School softball team claimed its second state title in program history with a victory in the Virginia High School League Class 6 state championship in 2023; and

WHEREAS, after winning a state tournament doubleheader on June 9, the McLean High School Highlanders advanced to the state final the following day and defeated the James Madison High School Warhawks by a score of 2–1; and

WHEREAS, the McLean Highlanders took the lead in the top of fourth inning and held it for the rest of the game, adding their second run in the top of the sixth inning before the Madison Warhawks responded with their only score in the bottom of the sixth; and

WHEREAS, with their three whirlwind playoff victories in 28 hours, the McLean Highlanders finished the season with a 21–6 record and the state crown; and

WHEREAS, Maurice Tawil became head coach of the McLean Highlanders in 2007 and led the team to its last state championship win in 2010; he recorded his 301st career win as a coach at the 2023 state final; and

WHEREAS, the victorious season is a tribute to the skill and hard work of the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of coaches and staff, and the enthusiastic support of the entire McLean High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the McLean High School softball team on winning the Virginia High School League Class 6 state championship in 2023; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the McLean High School softball team as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the team's achievements and best wishes for the future.
