Commending Lake Braddock Secondary School on the occasion of its 40th anniversary.

WHEREAS, in 2011, Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke will celebrate 40 years of providing quality education to secondary school students in Fairfax County; and

WHEREAS, originally constructed in 1971, Lake Braddock Secondary School completed a three-year renovation project in 2007 and now offers state-of-the-art classroom technology to its more than 3,800 seventh through twelfth grade students; and

WHEREAS, committed to academic excellence, Lake Braddock Secondary School integrates technology into its multifaceted teaching approach; and

WHEREAS, Lake Braddock Secondary School fosters an individual learning environment by dividing students into teams of 125 students, with core subject teachers, a guidance counselor, and a learning disabilities counselor for each team; and

WHEREAS, Lake Braddock Secondary School monitors student achievement and uses the team structure to create communities within the school where teachers and guidance counselors develop supportive relationships with students; and

WHEREAS, students at Lake Braddock Secondary School take Advanced Placement courses in every major discipline and enjoy a varied and extensive selection of elective courses; and

WHEREAS, outside of the classroom, Lake Braddock Secondary School offers students a broad array of extracurricular, community, volunteer, and competitive academic and athletic programs to enhance student learning processes and individual development; and

WHEREAS, the guidance department at Lake Braddock Secondary School monitors student academic progress and offers support to students through parent consultation, college and career counseling, support and peer mediation programs, testing obligations, and mentoring opportunities; and

WHEREAS, with Scholastic Aptitude Test scores above the national average and more than 80 percent of students matriculating into four-year colleges, Lake Braddock Secondary School takes pride in the academic strength of its students; and

WHEREAS, Lake Braddock Secondary School can claim such illustrious alumni as ESPN college basketball analyst Hubert Davis; author and journalist Matthew Continetti; Olympians Allen Johnson, Ed Moses, Susan Williams, and Justin Spring; professional soccer player Mia Hamm; violinist Ann Marie Calhoun; actresses Tiffany Dupont, and Julia Campbell; and rock band members Eric Axelson, Travis Morrison, and Steve Cummings; and

WHEREAS, operating on the premises of academic excellence, discipline, creativity, and high expectations, Lake Braddock Secondary School strives to make the dream of success a reality for all students; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Lake Braddock Secondary School on the occasion of its 40th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates present a copy of this resolution to Principal Dave Thomas on behalf of Lake Braddock Secondary School as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude to the school for its commitment to the young people of Fairfax County and best wishes for a joyful 40th anniversary celebration.
