HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 835
Celebrating the life of George L. Barton IV.

WHEREAS, George L. Barton IV, a war hero, an accomplished journalist, a public servant, and a respected educator, died on November 24, 2012; and

WHEREAS, George Barton earned a bachelor's degree from Virginia Military Institute (VMI), master's degrees from the University of Virginia and American University, and a doctorate from George Washington University; and

WHEREAS, following his graduation from VMI, George Barton received a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Army; while deployed with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam, George Barton earned four Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars, and a Silver Star; and

WHEREAS, after beginning an illustrious journalism career at the Orange County Review, George Barton went on to become the editor of The Fauquier Democrat in 1980 and the acclaimed editor of the Loudoun Times-Mirror in 1983; and

WHEREAS, in 1991 George Barton was elected as the first chair-at-large of the Loudoun Board of Supervisors and, with his clear, comprehensive leadership style, was able to guide the county through various challenges; and

WHEREAS, in 1995, when George Barton became the chair of the Virginia Baseball Stadium Authority and the director of the Shenandoah University campus in Loudoun, he applied those same leadership and organizational skills to sports and education; and

WHEREAS, George Barton continued his career in education, going on to teach English and journalism at Park View High School; and

WHEREAS, an inspiration to his students, George Barton urged them to work hard toward achieving their goals; and

WHEREAS, in addition to being an accomplished man of letters, George Barton also spent 10 years as a firefighter and CPR instructor with the Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department; and

WHEREAS, having consistently shown leadership, intelligence, and tenacity in all his roles, George Barton was an outstanding role model; and

WHEREAS, George Barton is survived by his wife, Kathy; his children, Sara, Ethan, and India, and their families; his father, Reverend George Barton III; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a decorated veteran and a dedicated journalist, educator, and public servant, George L. Barton IV; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of George L. Barton IV as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
