WHEREAS, the Heritage High School Governor's STEM Academy will open its doors to students in September of 2013; and WHEREAS, Heritage High School, currently a magnet school for engineering and technology in Newport News, will offer a focus on architecture and engineering design, computer systems technology, electronics and engineering, and modeling and simulation when the Governor's STEM Academy opens; and WHEREAS, by 2014, two million jobs are expected to be created in STEM-related fields in the United States; 11,150 jobs in 11 advanced technology and manufacturing occupations are expected to be created, with 10,000 of those positions at the Newport News Shipbuilding site; and WHEREAS, the Heritage High School Governor's STEM Academy, under the direction of Principal Michael Nichols and Program Administrator Toinette Outland, will provide students the knowledge and skills to succeed in a workplace centered on technology; and WHEREAS, in addition to taking English, math, science, social studies, physical education, and world languages courses, Heritage High School Governor's STEM Academy students will take a technology course each year related to their career interest; and WHEREAS, students at the Heritage High School Governor's STEM Academy will also be required to complete a minimum of 200 hours of school and community service during their four years of high school and a minimum of 15 hours in an internship during their senior year; and WHEREAS, Heritage High School Governor's STEM Academy students will have the opportunity to receive college credit at Thomas Nelson Community College and earn various industry certifications; and WHEREAS, the Heritage High School Governor's STEM Academy held a celebratory event on December 6, 2012, with congratulatory remarks from Dr. Ashby Kilgore, superintendent of Newport News Public Schools and looks forward to preparing students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and math; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Heritage High School Governor's STEM Academy on the occasion of its opening in 2013; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Heritage High School Governor's STEM Academy as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes for the future. |
