HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 770
Celebrating the life of Johnnie Knight.

WHEREAS, Johnnie Knight, a respected community leader and resident of Suffolk, died on December 30, 2010; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from Nansemond County Training School, Johnnie Knight attended Virginia State University until his enlistment in the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, a proud and faithful patriot, Johnnie Knight served his country during World War II and was a respected veteran; and

WHEREAS, Johnnie Knight was a successful entrepreneur who owned and operated Knight's Garage and prided himself on quality service and positive customer relationships; and

WHEREAS, Johnnie Knight devoted his energies to the Laurel Hill United Church of Christ where he served as a deacon, sexton, superintendent, and treasurer; and

WHEREAS, for 63 years, Johnnie Knight was both a member and the superintendent of the Middle District Community Christmas service; and

WHEREAS, motivated by a desire to reconnect with his classmates and to give back to his community, Johnnie Knight was a charter member of the Nansemond County Training School Alumni Association; and

WHEREAS, driven by a sense of civic duty, Johnnie Knight helped establish the Holland-Holy Neck Civic League and remained an active member; and

WHEREAS, proud of the sacrifices made by his fellow veterans and committed to mentoring and sponsorship of youth programs, Johnnie Knight was a charter member of the American Legion Post No. 315; and

WHEREAS, Johnnie Knight will be fondly remembered by his high school sweetheart and wife of 64 years, Katie; his five children, Joan, Julpenia, Johnnie, Andri, and Gwendolyn; his 13 grandchildren; his 15 great-grandchildren, and many family members, friends, and neighbors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Johnnie Knight, respected community leader; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Johnnie Knight as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
