HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 753
Commending Lucille Liechty.

WHEREAS, Lucille Liechty, a respected and admired citizen of Burke, is recognized for her commitment to education and her community on the occasion of her 100th birthday; and

WHEREAS, born on September 25, 1910, in rural Stryker, Ohio, Lucille Liechty made Virginia her home in 2003; and

WHEREAS, after graduating as valedictorian of her high school at the age of 16, Lucille Liechty became the first member of her family to attend college; and

WHEREAS, to the immense pride of her parents, in 1931 Lucille Liechty received her bachelor's degree from what is today Bowling Green State University in Ohio; and

WHEREAS, her thirst for knowledge still unquenched, Lucille Liechty continued to pursue her education with post graduate course work at Ohio State University; and

WHEREAS, eager to inspire a love of learning in others, Lucille Liechty taught English, French, and drama at Attica, Bryan, and Stryker High Schools; and

WHEREAS, Lucille Liechty and her devoted husband, Chris, were married in 1939 and had two beloved children, Phil and Marilyn; and

WHEREAS, instilling a sense of community and service to others in her children, Lucille Liechty volunteered her time and abundant energies to many Fulton County Schools projects and activities, including the Parent Teachers Association, high school band boosters, National Retired Teachers Association, American Association of University Women, her church, and the county's primary hospital; and

WHEREAS, lively and inspired at the age of 90, Lucille Liechty won second place in the Historic Sauder Village poetry writing contest; and

WHEREAS, Lucille Liechty moved to Burke in 2003 to live with her daughter, Marilyn, and her son-in-law, Donald; and

WHEREAS, Lucille Liechty describes the secret to a long and happy life as maintaining a positive attitude, staying active, and helping others; and

WHEREAS, in honor of her 100th birthday, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors declared September 25th as Lucille Liechty Day in the Braddock District of Fairfax County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Lucille Liechty for her commitment to education and her community on the occasion of her 100th birthday; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lucille Liechty as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation of her many accomplishments.
