WHEREAS, beloved physician Dr. David B. Nichols, who served the residents of Tangier Island with extraordinary devotion and great skill, died on December 30, 2010; and WHEREAS, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, David Nichols was the beloved son of the late Peter Alexander Cunningham Nichols and Marian Buell Nichols, and brother to Peter, Scott, and John; and WHEREAS, David Nichols received a medical degree from McGill University, where he met his beloved wife, Dianne, who provided him great support throughout his career; together they enjoyed 38 years of marriage and raised two children; and WHEREAS, Dr. Nichols decided to practice medicine focused on the needs of the entire family and after completing a residency in Newport News, formed the White Stone Family Practice in 1979; and WHEREAS, as the primary physician for the residents of Tangier Island, Dr. Nichols traveled weekly by personal plane, helicopter, chartered aircraft, or if weather required, by a two-hour one-way car and boat trip; and WHEREAS, a compassionate and skillful doctor, Dr. Nichols had a deep devotion to his patients and concern for their well-being that led him to a remarkable 31-year career that transformed the quality of health care received by residents of Tangier Island; and WHEREAS, Dr. Nichols recognized the need for quality preventative care and health education for his patients and worked to raise funds and support for the new state-of-the-art medical facility, which was dedicated and named in his honor in August of 2010; and WHEREAS, Dr. Nichols received numerous awards for his selfless service, including recognition by Staff Care as the Country Doctor of the Year and Country Doctor of the Decade in 2010; and WHEREAS, a man of immense heart and exceptional devotion, Dr. Nichols deeply touched the lives of Tangier Island residents and earned the admiration and respect of his colleagues and people throughout the Commonwealth and nation; and WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Dr. Nichols will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loving wife, Dianne; children, David and Sarah; and numerous other family members, friends, and the residents of Tangier Island; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved physician and esteemed citizen of the Commonwealth, David B. Nichols; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of David B. Nichols as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
