HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 70
Commending the Army Navy Country Club.

WHEREAS, for 100 years, the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington has provided outstanding service to its members and the Northern Virginia community; and

WHEREAS, originally known as the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps Country Club, the Army Navy Country Club was established by a group of military officers on November 11, 1924, and adopted its current name in 1930; and

WHEREAS, after several years of evaluating locations for the Army Navy Country Club, the club's board of governors selected the property in Arlington, where nearly a half-century before, the Union Army had built Fort Richardson to guard Washington, D.C., during the American Civil War; and

WHEREAS, the Army Navy Country Club officially broke ground on August 5, 1927, when Major General Charles P. Summerall, Chief of Staff of the Army, Major General John J. Lejuene, Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, and Rear Admiral Edward W. Eberele, Chief of Naval Operations, United States Navy, operated the plow to mark the beginning of construction; and

WHEREAS, to accommodate its growing membership, the Army Navy Country Club approved the purchase of the former Fairfax Country Club which was designed by Robert Trent Jones; the sale was completed in 1958 and the club subsequently relocated to the new property; and

WHEREAS, many of the Army Navy Country Club's early members would later become famous leaders during World War II, including General Omar N. Bradley, Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King, and General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, as well as President Dwight D. Eisenhower; and

WHEREAS, the Army Navy Country Club is proud to have counted among its membership individuals who have accomplished extraordinary deeds, including eight Medal of Honor recipients; and

WHEREAS, while the Army Navy Country Club's lineage is closely associated with the United States Armed Forces, its modern membership comprises men and women from the military, government officials, and civilians, all of whom share a deep passion for the club's history and accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, the Army Navy Country Club has built strong partnerships with local communities in both Arlington County and the City of Fairfax through its support of various charitable organizations and worthy causes; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Army Navy Country Club for its rich history on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Army Navy Country Club as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for its contributions to service members and their families.
