WHEREAS, Hanover County Superintendent of Schools Stewart D. Roberson has announced his retirement effective at the end of the 2010 - 2011 school year after more than three decades as an exemplary public educator; and WHEREAS, Stewart Roberson received his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from the University of Virginia and served as superintendent of Falls Church City Public Schools before coming to Hanover County in 1995; and WHEREAS, Dr. Roberson has continued Hanover County Public Schools' strong tradition of outstanding academic achievement and has vigorously supported administration, faculty, staff, and students in their pursuit of excellence; and WHEREAS, under Dr. Roberson's leadership, Hanover County Public Schools has remained one of the top school systems in the state, with the third highest graduation rate and third lowest dropout rate; and WHEREAS, during Dr. Roberson's tenure, Hanover County public schools have received 10 U.S. National Blue Ribbon School awards, and 18 schools have been designated by the Governor's Office or Virginia Board of Education as schools of excellence; and WHEREAS, with Dr. Roberson at the helm, Hanover County Public Schools became the first school district to earn the U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award for Continuing Excellence and the first to undergo a districtwide accreditation process by international accrediting agency AdvancED/SACS CASI; and WHEREAS, an exemplary administrator, Dr. Roberson has been committed to not only academic excellence but efficiency and cost effectiveness as well; Hanover County Public Schools has one of Virginia's lowest costs per pupil and has been frequently cited by multiple organizations and agencies as a model of student achievement and cost effectiveness; and WHEREAS, Dr. Roberson has overseen the construction of new facilities and renovation of other facilities as well as expanded educational opportunities, including career and technical course offerings, alternative education and English as a Second Language classes, and JROTC; and WHEREAS, a respected leader in his field, Dr. Roberson has served in various capacities for numerous professional organizations, including the Virginia Association of School Superintendents, Urban Superintendents Association of America, AdvancED, and International Baccalaureate Organization; and WHEREAS, Dr. Roberson has received numerous awards and accolades for his outstanding service, including recognition as the American Association of School Administrators Virginia Superintendent of the Year and recipient of the AdvancED National Award for Excellence in Education Leadership and the University of Virginia's Raven Award; and WHEREAS, Dr. Roberson leaves Hanover County Public Schools well-positioned for success in the future and will continue to share his educational experience and expertise after retirement as a graduate-level instructor of future superintendents and school principals; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Stewart D. Roberson for his distinguished service to Hanover County Public Schools on the occasion of his retirement; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Stewart D. Roberson as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and appreciation for his dedication to providing an outstanding learning environment for Hanover County students. |
