WHEREAS, Dr. Richard L. Hoffman, curator emeritus of recent invertebrates at the Virginia Museum of Natural History, passed away on June 10, 2012, at age 84; and WHEREAS, Dr. Hoffman devoted most of his life to the natural history of Virginia and the southern Appalachians, while also earning an international reputation as the leading authority on the world's milliped fauna; and WHEREAS, Dr. Hoffman published over 500 scholarly papers and books and more than 50 popular articles, with his first publication in 1944 at age 16; and WHEREAS, Dr. Hoffman described more than 600 new taxa and had nearly 50 taxa named in his honor; and WHEREAS, Dr. Hoffman served as professor of biology at Radford University for 29 years; and WHEREAS, Dr. Hoffman was instrumental in the founding of the Virginia Museum of Natural History, having staunchly supported the concept of a Virginia state museum of natural history for many years prior to its existence; and WHEREAS, Dr. Hoffman served as curator of recent invertebrates at the Virginia Museum of Natural History for 20 years, retiring in 2009 after having also served as director of research and collections from 2007 to 2009; and WHEREAS, Dr. Hoffman was appointed curator emeritus of recent invertebrates at the Virginia Museum of Natural History by the museum's board of trustees in 2009; and WHEREAS, Dr. Hoffman was a passionate advocate for natural science education for all ages; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Dr. Richard L. Hoffman, curator emeritus at the Virginia Museum of Natural History, professor of biology at Radford University, world-renowned scientist, and dedicated educator and mentor; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Richard L. Hoffman as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
