WHEREAS, the United States is celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution giving women the right to vote; and WHEREAS, there have been many decades of work by women and men to bring equality to women in Virginia and in the City of Alexandria; and WHEREAS, upon completion of a 1974 study on the status of women, the Alexandria City Council established the Commission for Women in order to eliminate gender discrimination and to encourage equal opportunity for women in all aspects of their lives; and WHEREAS, the Commission's members continue to provide advice and consultation to City Council on issues concerning women; and WHEREAS, in 1980 the Commission for Women held its 1st Annual Salute to Women Awards Banquet; and WHEREAS, in 2010 the Alexandria Commission for Women is celebrating its 30th Annual Salute to Women Awards Banquet; and WHEREAS, the banquet honors the accomplishment of women in various areas such as lifetime achievement, arts, legislation, business, public health and safety, community services, and rising stars; and WHEREAS, because of the work of the members of the Commission for Women for the past 36 years, and all women in Alexandria City, the City of Alexandria has become a premier place to live and work; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Alexandria Commission for Women as it celebrates its 30th Annual Salute to Women Awards Banquet; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Alexandria Commission for Women as an expression of the General Assembly's respect and admiration for the Commission's work on behalf of the women of Alexandria. |
