HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 40
Commending Delia H. Atwood.

WHEREAS, Delia H. Atwood is recognized for her longtime service to her community and her fellow citizens; and

WHEREAS, Delia H. "Dee" Atwood was born on January 15, 1910, in Repton, Alabama, and moved to Virginia in the 1930s; and

WHEREAS, for over 60 years, Dee Atwood lived in Arlington, and she was very active in her community and a faithful member of Mount Olivet Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS, while residing in Arlington, Dee Atwood worked for the federal government as an exemplary stenographer and clerk in Washington, D.C., until her retirement in 1968; and

WHEREAS, during her work day, Dee Atwood had the opportunity to meet many dignitaries over the years, and one of the most memorable was when she met President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt; and

WHEREAS, Dee Atwood was married to Virgil Atwood, who also worked for the federal government as an acclaimed cabinetmaker; and

WHEREAS, Dee Atwood now lives in the City of Richmond, where she is a member of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church; and

WHEREAS, Dee Atwood has given her time and talents to many civic organizations, including as a member of the Organized Women Voters of Arlington, the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia, and the Monumental-Wythe Neighborhood Watch; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Delia H. Atwood for her longtime service to her community on the occasion of her 100th birthday; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Delia H. Atwood as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation of her many accomplishments.
