HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 39
Commending Michael A. Jones.

WHEREAS, Michael A. Jones of Chatham retired from the Commonwealth of Virginia on October 1, 2009, after serving the people of the Commonwealth for over 30 years; and

WHEREAS, Mike Jones began his distinguished law-enforcement career as a deputy sheriff for the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office in 1977 and then served as a police officer for Virginia Commonwealth University and the Division of Capitol Police; and

WHEREAS, Mike Jones joined the Division of Capitol Police on May 1, 1982, where he served faithfully until June 3, 2007; and

WHEREAS, throughout his outstanding career, Mike Jones has been called upon to serve his fellow citizens in troubling times, such as during the sniper attacks in the greater Richmond area, the September 11 tragedy, and the white powder scares at the Capitol and other municipal buildings; and

WHEREAS, because of his professionalism and great knowledge of law enforcement, Mike Jones was appointed to the Critical Incident Analysis Group of the University of Virginia and was an adjunct faculty member for the National Criminal Justice Command College and Virginia Commonwealth University; and

WHEREAS, Mike Jones worked in the private sector for Northrop Grumman, Inc., as director of security, as well as for William H. Gordon Associates, Inc., where he currently travels all over the world as director of the company's Site Security Consulting Group; and

WHEREAS, always willing to give back to his community, Mike Jones has served as part-time town manager and director of police services in Chatham; and

WHEREAS, Mike Jones has received numerous awards and commendations for his many contributions to the Commonwealth and his dedication to duty, including the Target stores' 2000 Police Officer of the Year Award; and

WHEREAS, admired and respected by legislators, General Assembly employees, and his fellow law-enforcement officers, Mike Jones will be greatly missed at the Capitol in Richmond and his example will guide those who carry on his important work; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Michael A. Jones on his many years of exemplary public service with the Commonwealth of Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Michael A. Jones as an expression of the General Assembly's best wishes for a happy and rewarding retirement.
