WHEREAS, Pearl Mae Wilson is a vibrant member of the Richmond community who has dedicated her life to the care and support of others; and
WHEREAS, Pearl "Pearly" Mae Wilson was born on Sandy Island, South Carolina, to members of the Gullah Tribe, an African American ethnic group in the Lowcountry region of the United States that is descended from former slaves; and
WHEREAS, Pearly Mae Wilson was raised by her grandmother, who was also the island midwife, and completed her education up to the eighth grade by traveling to the mainland on a boat to attend school; and
WHEREAS, a caring and responsible sister, Pearly Mae Wilson began working to support her siblings at a young age; and
WHEREAS, Pearly Mae Wilson married at age 19, and she and her late husband settled in Richmond, where they raised seven children; she worked three jobs to support her family, including caring for the elderly in the community and providing housekeeping services; and
WHEREAS, Pearly Mae Wilson was a champion for the importance of a good education who helped her children attain college scholarships; she is also a talented author who has written many delightful poems; and
WHEREAS, Pearly Mae Wilson's three surviving children have followed her example of servant-leadership; one son was inspired to become a poet, one daughter works for the federal government, and another daughter is a social worker in Richmond; and
WHEREAS, throughout her life, Pearly Mae Wilson has been guided to help others by her deep and abiding faith, and she inspires everyone who meets her through her boundless generosity and unfailing kindness; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Pearl Mae Wilson for her lifetime of service to others; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Pearl Mae Wilson as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her personal achievements.
