WHEREAS, Delia Henderson Atwood of Richmond, a centenarian whose long and productive life was marked by service to her country, her state, and her fellow citizens, died on January 28, 2012, just 13 days after her 102nd birthday; and WHEREAS, Delia Henderson "Dee" Atwood was a native of Alabama; she was born in Repton on January 15, 1910, and was raised in Atmore, Alabama, before moving to Washington, D.C., in the 1930s when she was a young woman; and WHEREAS, Dee Atwood spent most of her career as a stenographer for the federal government until her retirement in 1968; she lived in Arlington County and attended Mount Olivet Methodist Church; and WHEREAS, when Dee Atwood moved to Richmond, she joined the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter; during her lifetime, she was a member of Circle Center Adult Day Services, Organized Women Voters of Arlington, the Richmond Irish American Society, and she was very proud of her affiliation with Clan Henderson; and WHEREAS, Dee Atwood was predeceased by her husband, Virgil, who was an acclaimed cabinetmaker for the federal government; she is fondly remembered and greatly missed by her daughter, Bonnie, and her family, and by numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a loving mother and wife, a woman of faith, and a dedicated public servant, Delia Henderson Atwood; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Delia Henderson Atwood as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory and appreciation for her many contributions to her country and to the Commonwealth. |
