WHEREAS, Sylvia Jennings Henderson of Charlottesville, a teacher, principal, and advocate for children's education, died on January 21, 2012; and WHEREAS, Sylvia Henderson, who was born in Norfolk and raised in South Boston, Virginia, graduated from Halifax County High School, and after earning a bachelor's degree from Longwood College, taught school in Danville; and WHEREAS, after receiving a master's degree in school administration from the University of Virginia, Sylvia Henderson and her family moved to Charlottesville, where she embarked on a 32-year career with the Albemarle County Public Schools; and WHEREAS, Sylvia Henderson guided several generations of young children during her tenure with the Albemarle County school system; during her three decades of service, she served as principal of Woodbrook Elementary School, Agnor-Hurt Elementary School, and Meriwether Lewis Elementary School; and WHEREAS, after she retired in 2008, Sylvia Henderson continued to make the children of the Commonwealth a priority; she was active in the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals and recently was the organization's state president; and WHEREAS, Sylvia Henderson served as a mentor at the University of Virginia to students who were preparing to teach or to become school administrators; she also was involved with state and national educational causes, and locally she was active in preschool educational projects; and WHEREAS, those remaining to cherish the memory of Sylvia Henderson are her devoted husband, Glenwood; her son, David, and his family; and many other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen and esteemed educator, Sylvia Jennings Henderson; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sylvia Jennings Henderson as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory. |
