HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 321
Celebrating the life of Susan Pope Irving.

WHEREAS, Susan Pope Irving, a devoted public servant and community leader and a proud, lifelong resident of Waverly, passed away on February 15, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Susan Irving was born in Waverly to the late Leverette and Eloise Pope and helped her father run his local grocery store until it closed in 1987; and

WHEREAS, Susan Irving cultivated a passion for servant leadership from a young age and volunteered for countless community activities, fundraisers, disaster relief efforts, and other events; and

WHEREAS, Susan Irving was a member of the Waverly Rescue Squad for 17 years and was named Outstanding Squadsman of the Year in 1979 and 1982, and Squadsman of the Year in 1984; and

WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to her fellow Waverly residents, Susan Irving ran for and was elected as mayor from 2000 to 2010; and

WHEREAS, guided by her faith in all her endeavors, Susan Irving taught Sunday school for many years at Waverly Baptist Church and enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a member of Waverly United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS, Susan Irving will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her husband, Frank; her sons, Greg and Matt, and their families; her stepchildren, Mandy and Mark, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Susan Pope Irving, former mayor of Waverly and a vibrant member of her community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Susan Pope Irving as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
