WHEREAS, Chester R. Lane of Martinsville, a devoted husband, father, and educator, and a man of strong faith, died on September 11, 2011; and WHEREAS, Chester Lane, who graduated from Western Kentucky University, first taught in the Martinsville public school system before World War II; he served in the United States Army Air Corps during the war, and afterward returned to the classroom, instructing hundreds of pupils until he retired in 1981; and WHEREAS, as an industrial arts teacher for 40 years and head of the Industrial Arts Department, Chester Lane spent his professional career in service to young people and was committed to bringing out the best in his students; and WHEREAS, Chester Lane hoped that by encouraging his students to master the basics of a trade, they would then be motivated to complete their high school education, as he knew that not all of the young men and women who studied Industrial Arts would attend college; and WHEREAS, Chester Lane was active in the Virginia Industrial Arts Association (VIAA) and other educational associations, serving as VIAA president from 1962 to 1965; he received the organization's Teacher of the Year award in 1963, and in 1981 he was given the group's Outstanding Service Award; and WHEREAS, upon his retirement, the Virginia Industrial Arts Association further honored Chester Lane by naming its Industrial Arts Teacher of the Year award after him; and WHEREAS, the Martinsville public school system also showed its appreciation for the many years Chester Lane spent serving its young people by naming the vocational building at Martinsville High School in his honor; and WHEREAS, Chester Lane belonged to the First United Methodist Church in Martinsville, and he was praised for being a strong role model whose faith and values were an example not just for his students, but for the entire community; and WHEREAS, Chester Lane is dearly remembered by his wife, Betty R. Lane; his children, Annette, Mary, Sarah, Amy, and Patrick, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a devoted husband, father, and teacher, Chester R. Lane; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Chester R. Lane as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
