HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 188
Commending the Mills E. Godwin High School girls' tennis team.

WHEREAS, the Mills E. Godwin High School girls' tennis team capped an undefeated season (21 - 0) by winning the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Group AAA state championship at Huntington Park Tennis Center in Newport News on May 30, 2009; and

WHEREAS, having appeared in eight consecutive finals, Mills Godwin High School of Henrico County defeated Thomas Jefferson High School of Alexandria 5 - 2, clinching a sixth state title for the Eagles in eight years; and

WHEREAS, on the way to the state tournament, Mills Godwin High School defeated Deep Run High School 5 - 0 in the Central Region championship, marking the team's tenth consecutive regional title win; and

WHEREAS, the Eagles competed in 161 individual matches during the season and won 144, which is an astounding 89.4 percent of their matches played; the team played 19 matches in the tournament and won 15 of them; and

WHEREAS, seniors Mary Frances Dudley and Megan Martin had an amazing 81 - 3 team record for a 96.4 percent winning percentage during their four years; they had three district championships, four regional championships, one state final, and three state titles; and

WHEREAS, members of the hardworking 2009 Mills Godwin girls' tennis team were Michelle Akerman, Jesse Dominick, Mary Frances Dudley, Jane Fellowes, Jordan Jessee, Jessica Kocen, Meg Kristofak, Kate Larsen, Olivia Long, Peyton Manchester, Megan Martin, Haley Moses, Nicole Parker, Becky Seidel, Elly Weber, Alexandra Wilder, and Maddie Wood; and

WHEREAS, the championship performance of the 2009 Eagles is a tribute to the talent, commitment, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Mark Seidenberg and his assistant coaches Mary Bruner, Eddie Parker, and Cathleen Crouch; and the support of the parents, students, and faculty of Mills E. Godwin High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the undefeated Mills E. Godwin High School Eagles on winning the 2009 VHSL Group AAA state championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Mark Seidenberg as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the outstanding performance of the 2009 Mills E. Godwin High School girls' tennis team.
