WHEREAS, in 2016, the Christiansburg Lions Club celebrates its 75th anniversary of volunteerism and service to the community, the Commonwealth, and the world; and WHEREAS, the Christiansburg Lions Club was chartered on February 25, 1941, and was sponsored by the nearby Blacksburg Host Lions Club; the Christiansburg club dates to the early years of the Lions International organization; and WHEREAS, the motto of Lions International is "We Serve!" and the members of the Christiansburg Lions Club are actively engaged in efforts to help the community, with a special emphasis on eyesight conservation and programs that assist the blind and vision impaired; and WHEREAS, the members of the Christiansburg Lions Club support vision screening efforts for school children, surgeries that will aid in sight restoration, and the Leader Dogs for the Blind program; additionally, the group works to help people with hearing loss; and WHEREAS, throughout the New River Valley, the Christiansburg Lions Club has collected old eyeglasses that can be reused by people who cannot afford to buy new eyeglasses; each year in the Commonwealth, more than 300,000 eyeglasses are recycled at a nearby Lions Club eyeglass recycling center; and WHEREAS, the members of the Christiansburg Lions Club are grateful for the community's strong support and encouragement; the club will celebrate its 75th anniversary at its annual Charter Night celebration on February 23, 2016; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Christiansburg Lions Club on the occasion of its 75th anniversary of volunteerism and service to the community; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Doug Kanney, president of the Christiansburg Lions Club, as an expression of the General Assembly's respect and admiration for the organization's many years of civic involvement and its commitment to improving vision and hearing for people in need in the Commonwealth and the world. |
