WHEREAS, James L. McLemore III, a dedicated community servant and attorney from Suffolk, died on September 15, 2009; and WHEREAS, a native of Suffolk, James McLemore graduated from Suffolk High School, received an undergraduate degree from Randolph-Macon College, and a law degree from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at The College of William and Mary; and WHEREAS, James McLemore proudly served his country in the United States Naval Reserve before beginning his legal career; and WHEREAS, following a family tradition of community and public service that began with his grandfather, James McLemore served as deputy clerk of the Nansemond County Circuit Court and as Clerk of the Circuit Court of the City of Suffolk; and WHEREAS, an entrepreneurial man, James McLemore opened his own law office in 1975 and practiced law with great integrity and diligence until his retirement in 2008; and WHEREAS, James McLemore was mindful of the needs in the community and was a member of the Ruritan Club, Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society, and Suffolk Rotary Club, where he was past president and a Paul Harris fellow; and WHEREAS, an Eagle Scout, James McLemore actively supported Scouting in the Suffolk area and served for many years on the Troup I Committee; and WHEREAS, James McLemore was a lifelong member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where he was actively involved in the church's missions in the community; and WHEREAS, a man of many interests, James McLemore loved history and had written about his own family's ancestry; he was also a gifted model railroader and was instrumental in building the model train layout in the historic Seaboard Train Station; and WHEREAS, James McLemore will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 37 years, Mardane; their three children, James, Thomas, and Sarah and their families; and his many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated community and public servant, James L. McLemore III; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James L. McLemore III as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
