HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 1074
Commending Sergeant John Kelly.

WHEREAS, Sergeant John Kelly retired from the Purcellville Police Department in October 2016, after a stellar 38-year career as a sworn police officer; and

WHEREAS, John Kelly began his career in law enforcement in 1977, while serving as a United States Army military policeman; and

WHEREAS, upon being honorably discharged from the United States Army, in 1980, John Kelly joined the Purcellville Police Department, which is the department where his heart remained despite his service in other local police departments over his career; and

WHEREAS, John Kelly went to work for the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office from 1983 to 1986; he returned to the Purcellville Police Department for two years, then served with the Middleburg Police Department for nearly 10 years; and

WHEREAS, in 1998, John Kelly returned to the Purcellville Police Department for good, and he served the members of the Purcellville community for the next 18 years; and

WHEREAS, John Kelly has demonstrated a spirit of community service and dedication to public safety that is core to the mission and integrity of the Purcellville Police Department; and

WHEREAS, all members of the Purcellville Police Department are thankful for John Kelly's professionalism, loyalty, and service over the past four decades, and his colleagues across law enforcement will miss him greatly; and

WHEREAS, in retirement, John Kelly will remain active in the western Loudoun community in which he lives, and he looks forward to spending more time with his wife, Patty, without whose support his long career would not have been possible; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Sergeant John Kelly on his retirement from the Purcellville Police Department after a stellar 38-year career in law enforcement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sergeant John Kelly as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his commitment to protecting the citizens of Loudoun County and outstanding service as a sworn police officer.
