WHEREAS, Michael Moore, a respected educator and the longtime head coach of the Matoaca High School wrestling team, retired in 2015 after decades of mentorship to local youth; and WHEREAS, while attending Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania, Michael Moore was a two-time conference champion, a two-time Eastern Wrestling League champion, a three-time national qualifier, and the university's first two-time champion; he was named a Division I All-American and selected for the 1980 United States Olympic wrestling team; and WHEREAS, during his distinguished career as a wrestling coach, Michael Moore served as the head coach of the Petersburg High School wrestling team, where he coached two individual state title winners; and WHEREAS, Michael Moore also coached Virginia State University's first national finalist; he joined Matoaca High School in 2005 and inspired 11 individual champions and led the Warriors to several team victories; and WHEREAS, under Michael Moore's leadership, the Matoaca High School Warriors won back-to-back state team championships in 2014 and 2015, three regular-season district championships, five district tournament championships, and four regional championships; and WHEREAS, Michael Moore was the first African American head coach to win a team wrestling state title in the Commonwealth; in 2012, he became the first African American to be inducted into the Virginia chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, in addition to his coaching duties, Michael Moore taught physical education for more than 40 years, including 15 years at Matoaca Middle School; and WHEREAS, after his well-earned retirement, Michael Moore plans to spend more time with his beloved family and offer his wisdom and sage guidance to other coaches in the region; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Michael Moore on the occasion of his retirement as head coach of the Matoaca High School wrestling team; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Michael Moore as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his service to the youth of Central Virginia and best wishes on a happy retirement. |
