SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 727
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Sergio Shearer
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of the Rio Grande Valley in mourning the loss of Sergio
  Shearer, who died April 4, 2011, at the age of 71; and
 
         WHEREAS, Sergio Shearer was born December 4, 1939, in
  Weslaco; he studied psychology at North Texas State University
  while attending cosmetology school in Fort Worth; and
 
         WHEREAS, Cofounder of the University of Cosmetology Arts
  and Sciences, Mr. Shearer played an important role in the
  cosmetology business in the Rio Grande Valley for many years;
  throughout the 1970s and 1980s, his salon, Sergio's, was one of
  the most popular in the region, with appointments booked months
  in advance; and
 
         WHEREAS, He and his family purchased the Magic Valley Beauty
  College in San Juan in 1976; under his leadership and direction,
  the McAllen campus was established and the institution has grown
  to include five campuses throughout the area; and
 
         WHEREAS, Mr. Shearer was appointed to the Texas Cosmetology
  Commission by Governor Ann Richards and worked diligently with
  legislators to ensure that the highest standards of the profession
  were maintained; active in civic and professional affairs, he
  served on the board of the American Association of Cosmetology
  Schools and was a commissioner on the Edinburg Housing Authority;
  and
 
         WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he
  gave generously to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued
  counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
 
         WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
  and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
  his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Sergio Shearer: his wife and dearest friend, Lucinda S.
  Leyva; his children, Andrea Shearer-Lee and Michael L. Shearer;
  his sister, Diana Fernandez; and his five grandchildren; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Sergio Shearer.
