Sergio Shearer | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the | ||
citizens of the Rio Grande Valley in mourning the loss of Sergio | ||
Shearer, who died April 4, 2011, at the age of 71; and | ||
WHEREAS, Sergio Shearer was born December 4, 1939, in | ||
Weslaco; he studied psychology at North Texas State University | ||
while attending cosmetology school in Fort Worth; and | ||
WHEREAS, Cofounder of the University of Cosmetology Arts | ||
and Sciences, Mr. Shearer played an important role in the | ||
cosmetology business in the Rio Grande Valley for many years; | ||
throughout the 1970s and 1980s, his salon, Sergio's, was one of | ||
the most popular in the region, with appointments booked months | ||
in advance; and | ||
WHEREAS, He and his family purchased the Magic Valley Beauty | ||
College in San Juan in 1976; under his leadership and direction, | ||
the McAllen campus was established and the institution has grown | ||
to include five campuses throughout the area; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Shearer was appointed to the Texas Cosmetology | ||
Commission by Governor Ann Richards and worked diligently with | ||
legislators to ensure that the highest standards of the profession | ||
were maintained; active in civic and professional affairs, he | ||
served on the board of the American Association of Cosmetology | ||
Schools and was a commissioner on the Edinburg Housing Authority; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he | ||
gave generously to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued | ||
counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and | ||
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, | ||
and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by | ||
his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd | ||
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
family of Sergio Shearer: his wife and dearest friend, Lucinda S. | ||
Leyva; his children, Andrea Shearer-Lee and Michael L. Shearer; | ||
his sister, Diana Fernandez; and his five grandchildren; and, be | ||
it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
memory of Sergio Shearer. | ||
