Patrick H. Murphy, Jr. | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the | ||
citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Patrick H. Murphy, | ||
Jr., who died March 29, 2013, at the age of 79; and | ||
WHEREAS, Pat Murphy was born May 12, 1933, in Nashville, | ||
Arkansas; he moved with his family to Austin at a young age and | ||
went on to graduate from L. C. Anderson High School; he earned a | ||
bachelor's degree in music from Huston-Tillotson College and | ||
served his country in the United States Army during the Korean | ||
War; and | ||
WHEREAS, He married Judge Harriet M. Murphy in 1968; the | ||
couple was blessed with a son, Charles, and six grandchildren; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Murphy enjoyed a long and fulfilling career | ||
with the United States Postal Service; he was one of the first | ||
African American postal workers in Austin to be promoted to a | ||
position of supervisor, and he was noted for training African | ||
Americans and Hispanics to fill important positions; during the | ||
course of his 33-year career, he worked in the post office at the | ||
Office of the Comptroller of Public Accounts; he retired in 1989; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Murphy was active in numerous community | ||
organizations; he was a charter member of Gamma Gamma Boulé and | ||
served as a Sire Archon and as a mentor at Barbara Jordan | ||
Elementary School, and he also served as a precinct judge and as a | ||
grand jury member; he was a jazz fan and an accomplished | ||
saxophonist who played in several groups, notably the James Polk | ||
Band and the Thomas Kincheon Band; and | ||
WHEREAS, Pat Murphy was a man of strength, integrity, and | ||
determination who gave unselfishly to others, and his enthusiasm | ||
for living each day to the fullest was inspirational; and | ||
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and | ||
grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured | ||
forever by his family and countless friends; now, therefore, be | ||
it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd | ||
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
family of Patrick H. Murphy, Jr.; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
memory of Patrick Murphy. | ||
