| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
| recognize Tom Luce, who is being honored by Mental Health America | ||
| of Texas with the Mary Elizabeth Holdsworth Butt Award for Mental | ||
| Health at the 52nd Annual Honoring Dinner: An Evening of Hope; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Tom Luce was a founding partner of the law firm of | ||
| Hughes and Luce and served as managing partner until his 1997 | ||
| retirement; a graduate of Southern Methodist University, he | ||
| specialized in the field of corporate and litigation practice and | ||
| served as lead attorney on billion dollar acquisitions and | ||
| mergers and as lead trial attorney on major commercial disputes; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Luce served as a United States Assistant | ||
| Secretary of Education under President George W. Bush; he has | ||
| been appointed five times by Texas governors to serve in major | ||
| positions, including chief justice pro tempore of the Texas | ||
| Supreme Court; and | ||
| WHEREAS, He had a profound impact on the public schools of | ||
| this state as chief of staff for the Texas Select Committee on | ||
| Public Education, which was responsible for creating the most | ||
| comprehensive education bill in Texas history; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Luce is currently serving as president and | ||
| chief executive officer of the Meadows Mental Health Policy | ||
| Institute, a nonpartisan organization designed to improve the | ||
| delivery of mental health services for all Texans; he is truly | ||
| deserving of special recognition for his many achievements; now, | ||
| therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th | ||
| Legislature, hereby commend Tom Luce on his many contributions to | ||
| this state and nation and extend congratulations to him on being | ||
| named the recipient of the Mary Elizabeth Holdsworth Butt Award | ||
| for Mental Health; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. | ||
