SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 657
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join the San Antonio Old Spanish Trail Centennial Celebration
  Association in commemorating the 100th anniversary of the
  creation of the Old Spanish Trail; and
         WHEREAS, The Old Spanish Trail movement was organized to
  promote a paved automobile highway across the southern United
  States that connected the historically important communities of
  Saint Augustine, New Orleans, San Antonio, El Paso, Tucson, and
  San Diego; organizers held the first meeting in Mobile, Alabama,
  in 1915, with subsequent meetings held in cities along the
  proposed route of the highway; and
         WHEREAS, Construction took place throughout the 1920s;
  zero-mile markers were erected in San Antonio and at both end
  points of the route, and travelogues were published annually to
  highlight the road's progress; upon the highway's completion in
  1929, a motorcade drove from San Diego to Saint Augustine and
  back; and
         WHEREAS, The 100th anniversary celebration of the roadway
  will include reenactments of the conferences that led to its
  creation and of the motorcade that marked its completion; it will
  also raise awareness of alternatives to the interstate highway
  system for travelers interested in recapturing the historic
  ambience of the gulf and southern border states; now, therefore,
  be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
  Legislature, hereby commend the San Antonio Old Spanish Trail
  Centennial Celebration Association on its efforts to raise
  awareness of the importance of this historic highway and extend
  to its members best wishes for a successful 100th anniversary
  celebration; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the association as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
