WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
join the citizens of Marble Falls in celebrating the 100th | ||
anniversary of the election of Ophelia "Birdie" Crosby Harwood as | ||
the first woman mayor in Texas; and | ||
WHEREAS, On April 2, 1917, several years before the passage | ||
of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which | ||
guaranteed women the right to vote, the people of Marble Falls | ||
elected Birdie Harwood as their mayor; and | ||
WHEREAS, Born in 1872 in Blanco County, Birdie married Dr. | ||
George Harwood, and they and their three sons settled in Marble | ||
Falls around 1900; Mrs. Harwood sought public office on the | ||
principle that once a woman had raised her children, it was her | ||
duty to do what she could to improve the community in which she | ||
lived; she ran on a platform of making the town clean and inviting | ||
and one of the beautiful spots in the state; and | ||
WHEREAS, Today, women hold positions of political | ||
influence throughout the state and nation, but it is truly | ||
fitting that those pioneers who paved the way for them receive | ||
special recognition; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th | ||
Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life and legacy of Ophelia | ||
"Birdie" Crosby Harwood on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of | ||
her election as the first woman mayor in Texas; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in | ||
honor of this historic occasion. | ||
