| Hazel Ruth Preston Bassett | ||
| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and | ||
| commemorates the life of Hazel Ruth Preston Bassett, who died | ||
| March 27, 2017, at the age of 102; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Hazel Bassett was born on July 31, 1914, to | ||
| William and Georgia Preston, in the Comyn community; she lived | ||
| most of her life in DeLeon, where she was widely respected and | ||
| admired for her talents and achievements; and | ||
| WHEREAS, She married the late Walton T. Bassett on | ||
| December 21, 1934; they raised two daughters together, Shirley and | ||
| Jolene, and she was blessed with many grandchildren and | ||
| great-grandchildren; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Bassett worked as a clerk and an operator for | ||
| the DeLeon Telephone Company for nearly four decades and was | ||
| active in a number of community organizations, including the | ||
| Women's Division of the DeLeon Chamber of Commerce; she was a | ||
| Worthy Matron in the local chapter of the Order of the Eastern | ||
| Star; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced her faith in her | ||
| daily life, she was a member for more than 80 years of First | ||
| Baptist Church; she was a skilled seamstress and a talented cook, | ||
| and she took great pleasure in traveling with her family and | ||
| playing bridge with her friends; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she | ||
| gave generously to others, and her warmth and her enthusiasm for | ||
| living each day to the fullest will not be forgotten by those who | ||
| were privileged to share in her life; and | ||
| WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, | ||
| and she leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by | ||
| her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th | ||
| Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
| family of Hazel Ruth Preston Bassett; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
| Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
| memory of Hazel Ruth Preston Bassett. | ||
