| WHEREAS, The University of Texas at San Antonio is | ||
| celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The university was created by the Texas | ||
| Legislature in 1969 with an enrollment of 670 graduate students | ||
| in its first class in 1973; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Through the collective efforts of Joe J. Bernal, | ||
| Franklin S. Spears, V. E. "Red" Berry, Wayne Connally, and Frank | ||
| Lombardino, the state legislature was inspired to create | ||
| UTSA; and | ||
| WHEREAS, As a proud member of The University of Texas | ||
| System, today UTSA has more than 32,000 students and some 132,000 | ||
| alumni contributing to communities around the world; and | ||
| WHEREAS, UTSA brings national recognition to Texas through | ||
| its programs of distinction in cybersecurity, health, energy, | ||
| sustainability, and human and social development, as well as | ||
| rankings naming UTSA as the third most military friendly | ||
| institution in the country, the No. 1 Hispanic Serving | ||
| Institution in the country, and one of the top 100 young | ||
| universities in the world; and | ||
| WHEREAS, UTSA has been designated by the Texas Legislature | ||
| as an emerging research university and is on the fast track to | ||
| attaining National Research University Fund eligibility and the | ||
| highest research designation by the Carnegie Foundation for the | ||
| Advancement of Teaching; and | ||
| WHEREAS, UTSA is creating a collaborative and impactful | ||
| government-university-industry ecosystem in San Antonio through | ||
| its new National Security Collaboration Center--the first of its | ||
| kind in Texas--and is also building the state's first School of | ||
| Data Science; and | ||
| WHEREAS, UTSA is an inclusive institution where 50 percent | ||
| of students are the first in their families to attend college and | ||
| students from all backgrounds can thrive; and | ||
| WHEREAS, UTSA is a catalyst for change in San Antonio and a | ||
| driver of the city's knowledge economy and economic development, | ||
| acting as a prosperity engine for our state; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Since its founding, UTSA has transformed lives | ||
| and prepared young people to go out and change the world with a | ||
| steadfast commitment to driving opportunity, access, and social | ||
| mobility for Texas students; and | ||
| WHEREAS, UTSA has embodied the hopes and dreams of | ||
| generations for 50 years and will continue to do so for the next | ||
| 50 and beyond; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th | ||
| Legislature, hereby honor The University of Texas at San Antonio | ||
| on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its establishment and | ||
| extend to all those associated with this rising institution | ||
| sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be | ||
| prepared for the university as an expression of high regard by | ||
| the Texas Senate. | ||
