SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 54
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Alumni
  Association of The University of Texas at Arlington in honoring
  the late football legend Charles Key for his role as a champion
  for the university's athletic programs; and
         WHEREAS, Charlie Key was a star player on the Mavericks
  football team from 1959 to 1962 and led the team as captain in
  1961 and 1962; after graduating with a bachelor's degree in
  mathematics in 1964, he spent 22 seasons on the football coaching
  staff, serving as running backs coach from 1964 to 1979 and as
  defensive coordinator from 1980 to 1985; he also served as head
  golf coach and as a physical education instructor; and
         WHEREAS, Charlie was a greatly respected coach and
  teacher; he was a loyal and supportive colleague, friend, and
  mentor, and he served as a father figure to many of the students
  who played on the university's teams; he was truly dedicated to
  the athletics program at The University of Texas at Arlington and
  strongly believed in the potential of such programs to affect the
  lives of student athletes in positive and lasting ways; and
         WHEREAS, He was a member of The University of Texas at
  Arlington Athletics Alumni Chapter advisory board and a two-term
  member of the Alumni Association board of directors; he was
  inducted into the school's Athletics Hall of Honor in 1993; and
         WHEREAS, Charlie Key's legacy is being honored at the
  Ultimate Huddle football program reunion, an event that will
  raise funds to establish the Charlie Key Fund for athletic
  capital improvements at The University of Texas at Arlington;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of University of Texas
  at Arlington football coach Charles Key and extend best wishes for
  a successful reunion and fund-raising event; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
  expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
