	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 498


	In Memory
	of
	John V. Singleton
	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
	citizens of Houston in mourning the loss of the Honorable John V.
	Singleton, who died March 20, 2015, at the age of 97; and
	WHEREAS, John Singleton was born on March 20, 1918, in
	Kaufman; he enriched the lives of all who knew him and was known
	for his integrity, his kindness, and his enthusiasm for living
	each day to the fullest; he became a highly regarded United
	States district judge; and
	WHEREAS, Mr. Singleton joined the United States Navy in
	1942 and served with distinction as a gunnery officer aboard the
	U.S.S. Dempsey during World War II; while on patrol, he helped
	lead efforts to rescue three downed United States Marine pilots
	near the Saint Matthias Islands; and
	WHEREAS, After his military service, Mr. Singleton began
	practicing law in the trial department of Fulbright, Crooker,
	Freeman and Bates; he started his own firm in 1954 and soon became
	a key player in Democratic politics; and
	WHEREAS, He was a regional coordinator for the Lyndon
	Johnson presidential campaign in 1964, and he was appointed to
	the federal bench by President Johnson in 1966; during his 27
	years as a United States judge, he oversaw criminal and civil
	cases that were seldom overturned in the appeals process; he was
	known as a champion for the downtrodden and is credited with
	transitioning his courthouse and the Southern Judicial District
	into the computer age; and

	WHEREAS, Judge Singleton was the devoted husband of Jane
	Singleton; after her death, he married Patsy Singleton, and they
	shared 11 years of happiness; he was a highly respected
	professional and a beloved member of his community, and he will
	long be remembered with deep admiration by all who were
	privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
	Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
	family of the Honorable John V. Singleton; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
	his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
	Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
	memory of John Singleton.
