	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 498


	In Memory
	of
	Wallace Edward Lockett

	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
	commemorates the life of Bishop Wallace Edward Lockett,
	presiding bishop of the Fifth Episcopal District of the Christian
	Methodist Episcopal Church, who died March 3, 2011; and

	WHEREAS, Wallace Edward Lockett earned a master of arts
	degree in church administration, a master of business
	administration degree, and an honorary doctorate, and he had been
	an itinerant minister in the Christian Methodist Episcopal
	Church since 1966; while serving in the United States Air Force,
	he was licensed to preach at Phillips Chapel Christian Methodist
	Episcopal Church in Tucson, Arizona; following his military
	service he was ordained a deacon and elder at the Florida Annual
	Conference and continued to serve at numerous churches in Florida
	and Texas; and

	WHEREAS, At the time of his episcopacy, he was the pastor
	of the Metropolitan Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in
	Houston, where he served for 25 years and launched 45 ministries;
	and

	WHEREAS, A spiritual, civic, and business leader, Bishop
	Lockett was a pioneer in Houston's economic development
	community and served as president and chief executive officer of
	the Metropolitan Community Economic Development Corporation; he
	was the former president and principal shareholder of Century
	Forest Industries in Lufkin, Texas; and

	WHEREAS, He was a member of the Texas College Board of
	Trustees in Tyler and served on advisory councils for several
	mayors; he was a past president of the Lufkin Branch of the
	National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; he
	was involved in a business in Ghana, West Africa, developing farm
	products and building affordable housing, medical clinics, and
	schools for the last 10 years; and

	WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband and father, and he leaves
	behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family, his
	many friends, and all those who had the good fortune to know him;
	now, therefore, be it

	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
	Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
	family of Bishop Wallace Edward Lockett: his wife, Lillie B.;
	his children, Dwayne Demetrius, Vernon Dale, and Nicole Tonita;
	and his five grandchildren; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
	his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
	Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
	memory of Bishop Wallace Edward Lockett.
