| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
| recognize Homer Hogues on the grand occasion of his 90th | ||
| birthday; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Homer Hogues was born on April 19, 1927, in | ||
| Navasota, to Leroy and Lucinda Hogues; he grew up in Waxahachie | ||
| and graduated from high school before entering into military | ||
| service with the United States Air Force; and | ||
| WHEREAS, After completing basic training, he was assigned | ||
| to the famed Tuskegee Airmen as a mechanic with the 99th Fighter | ||
| Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group; he was instrumental in preparing | ||
| the unit's aircraft for the first United States Air Force gunnery | ||
| competition in Las Vegas in 1949; and | ||
| WHEREAS, After retiring from military service with the | ||
| rank of staff sergeant, he embarked on a long and productive | ||
| career as a hard chrome plater with Lane Plating Works; he has | ||
| also been in great demand as a speaker for schools and church | ||
| groups to recount his inspirational experiences with the | ||
| Tuskegee Airmen; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Homer Hogues has lived through times and | ||
| experienced events that most people only know about through | ||
| history books; Sergeant Hogues was one of the few African | ||
| Americans selected to participate in President Harry S. Truman's | ||
| 1949 inaugural parade, and he attended the 2012 inaugural parade | ||
| of Barack Obama, the nation's first African American president; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A highly respected and admired member of his | ||
| community, Homer Hogues is noted for his warmth, his courage, and | ||
| his wise counsel, and he inspires those around him with his | ||
| enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th | ||
| Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to Homer Hogues on the | ||
| occasion of his 90th birthday; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. | ||
