SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 44
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Johnie Mae Gillespie Anderson on the joyous occasion of
  her 100th birthday on January 29, 2017; and
         WHEREAS, Johnie Mae Gillespie was born on January 29, 1917,
  in Silver Hills, Texas; she attended school in the Brazos County
  School District until she joined the workforce to help support
  her family; in the course of her long life, she worked in the
  cotton fields and at a cannery, a winery, and a café, and she
  served as a hospital laundress and as a domestic worker; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Anderson has been guided in all things by her
  Christian faith; she was a devoted member of Morning Star
  Missionary Baptist Church for 52 years, and she dedicated her
  time to serving as a Baptist Training Union teacher, a Sunday
  school teacher, a food bank volunteer, and a member of the Senior
  Mission and the Mission Chorus; and
         WHEREAS, Johnie Mae has lived a fruitful life and is proud
  to have been among the first mothers to walk in the March of Dimes
  campaign and to have voted for the nation's first black
  president; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Anderson is a beloved matriarch who has been
  blessed with six children, 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren,
  23 great-great-grandchildren, and a great-great-great-grandchild;
  in celebration of her birthday, family and loved ones are
  gathering at the Brazos Valley African American Museum in Bryan,
  where she will be honored as an original resident of Brazos
  County; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
  Legislature, hereby recognize Johnie Mae Gillespie Anderson as a
  treasured citizen of Texas and congratulate her on her 100th
  birthday; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her as a memento of this special day.
