Evelyn Marie Conner Hicks | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and | ||
commemorates the life of Evelyn Marie Conner Hicks, who died | ||
March 7, 2019, at the age of 67; and | ||
WHEREAS, Evelyn Hicks was born May 14, 1951, in Dallas, to | ||
Joe Allen Conner and Bertha Mae Bennett; she grew up along with | ||
her brother, James, in the Frazier Courts community in East | ||
Dallas, and she graduated from Lincoln High School in 1969; and | ||
WHEREAS, She attended the University of Houston, and she | ||
began a postgraduate program in education at Texas Southern | ||
University before earning a law degree at the university's | ||
Thurgood Marshall School of Law in 1980; and | ||
WHEREAS, She and her beloved husband, Donald W. Hicks Sr., | ||
met at freshman orientation in college, and the couple was | ||
blessed with two children, Donald and Shana; her three | ||
grandchildren and her nephew and nieces were a source of much | ||
pride and joy for her; and | ||
WHEREAS, She enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the | ||
practice of law; she served as a federal civil rights attorney | ||
with the United States Department of Education and worked for | ||
several prominent Dallas law firms; and | ||
WHEREAS, Active in Dallas County politics, she managed | ||
numerous campaigns and held leadership positions in a range of | ||
organizations, including Dallas Area Rapid Transit, the Southern | ||
Dallas Development Corporation, and the City of Dallas Judicial | ||
Nominating Committee; and | ||
WHEREAS, She was a Silver Star member of Alpha Kappa Alpha | ||
Sorority, Incorporated, and served as a mentor to countless young | ||
sorority members; she was also a longtime member of Mount Sinai | ||
Baptist Church; and | ||
WHEREAS, A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she | ||
leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by her | ||
family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th | ||
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
family of Evelyn Marie Conner Hicks; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
memory of Evelyn Marie Conner Hicks. | ||
