| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great | ||
| pleasure in recognizing Matthew K. Rose, who recently received | ||
| the national 2013 Horatio Alger Award; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This esteemed railroad executive was one of 11 | ||
| Americans selected for the award by the Horatio Alger Association | ||
| of Distinguished Americans, Incorporated; the honor is given to | ||
| individuals who have transcended limitations to become leaders | ||
| in their communities or professions; and | ||
| WHEREAS, As an awardee, Mr. Rose becomes a lifelong member | ||
| of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans and | ||
| serves as a role model for the organization's young scholarship | ||
| recipients; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The chairman and chief executive officer of | ||
| Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation, Mr. Rose exemplifies | ||
| the qualities of a true leader and entrepreneur; he made his way | ||
| up through the ranks of the trucking and railroad industries and | ||
| is widely respected for his can-do spirit; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Rose obtained a marketing degree from the | ||
| University of Missouri and began working for the Missouri Pacific | ||
| Railroad; he moved into the trucking sector and became vice | ||
| president of Triple Crown Services; the rails called him back, | ||
| however, and he joined Burlington Northern Railroad as vice | ||
| president, rising to the position of head executive of today's | ||
| Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This energetic doer finds time to serve as a | ||
| national trustee for the Boys and Girls Club of America and serve | ||
| on the national executive board of the Boy Scouts of America; | ||
| now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, | ||
| 83rd Legislature, hereby recognize Matthew K. Rose as a 2013 | ||
| Horatio Alger Award recipient and extend to him best wishes in | ||
| all his future endeavors; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| Mr. Rose as an expression of high esteem from the Texas Senate. | ||
