SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 398
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Incarnate Word Academy of Brownsville on the occasion
  of its 160th anniversary; and
         WHEREAS, Incarnate Word Academy was established by four
  sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament from Lyon,
  France, on March 7, 1853; and
         WHEREAS, The first Catholic school in Brownsville, the
  academy has since its inception been dedicated to providing a
  climate of learning and belief in service and has motivated
  students from throughout the region to commit themselves to
  academic excellence, a lifelong love of learning, and an
  awareness of the needs of the community; and
         WHEREAS, In its early years, the academy faced such
  challenges as border raids, yellow fever epidemics, hurricanes,
  and the Civil War, but the perseverance and sacrifice of the
  pioneering sisters served to overcome those obstacles and create
  an educational institution that has had a deep and enduring
  influence across the Rio Grande Valley; and
         WHEREAS, Today, the academy continues to offer a rigorous
  curriculum taught by dedicated teachers in order to prepare young
  men and women to face the tests of leadership in an ever-changing
  and complex society; it is truly fitting that this exceptional
  institution be recognized as it achieves this milestone in its
  history; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
  Legislature, hereby commend the students, faculty, advisory
  council, and staff of Incarnate Word Academy on their commitment
  to academic excellence, congratulate them on their institution's
  160 years of service, and extend to them best wishes for
  continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the academy as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
