SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 384
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Norma Frances "Tootsie" Tomanetz, the renowned
pitmaster of Snow's BBQ in Lexington, Texas, for her recent
induction into the Barbecue Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Tootsie Tomanetz began developing her skills with
the barbecue pit in 1967 at the City Meat Market in Giddings,
Texas, and she went on to serve as the pitmaster at the City Meat
Market in nearby Lexington for 20 years; she established a local
tradition of selling barbecue on Saturdays, which is when the
regional cattle auction brought farmers and ranchers to town, and
since 2003, she has continued that tradition at Snow's BBQ, a
little red shack known for big Texas flavor and owned by Kerry
Bexley; and
WHEREAS, Tootsie has been serving a devoted following of
locals for more than half a century, and she gained a statewide
fan base in 2008, when Texas Monthly deemed her savory cuts of
beef, pork, and chicken as "the best barbecue in Texas"; that
same year, the New York Times honored her smoked meats as "the
best Texas BBQ in the world"; and
WHEREAS, Now in her mid-80s, Tootsie continues to arrive at
Snow's in the early hours on Saturday mornings; her most
ambitious admirers also get an early start on the day, hoping to
be first in a long line of customers that begins forming several
hours before the doors open at 8 a.m.; and
WHEREAS, Tootsie Tomanetz was a 2018 semifinalist for one
of the coveted James Beard Awards; the celebrated and beloved
pitmaster has distinguished herself among the best cooks in the
nation, and she is indeed deserving of her many accolades; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
Legislature, hereby commend Tootsie Tomanetz for leading a proud
Texas tradition in world-class barbecue and extend to her
congratulations on her induction into the Barbecue Hall of Fame;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
