| Althea Lewis Renfro | ||
| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the | ||
| citizens of Houston in mourning the loss of Althea Lewis Renfro, | ||
| who died December 27, 2012, at the age of 85; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Althea Lewis was born February 10, 1927, in | ||
| Houston; a 1942 graduate of Phillis Wheatley High School, she | ||
| earned a bachelor's degree from Houston College for Negroes and a | ||
| master's degree from Texas Southern University; and | ||
| WHEREAS, She married Porter Renfro, Jr., and she enjoyed a | ||
| long and fulfilling career as an educator; she was a teacher at | ||
| Crawford and Hohl Elementary Schools in the Houston Independent | ||
| School District for more than 37 years and she was active in a | ||
| number of professional and civic organizations; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced her faith in her | ||
| daily life, she served as a church musician for over 30 years at | ||
| Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church and Zion Hill Missionary | ||
| Baptist Church; she was also a prolific poet whose work included | ||
| the lyrics to the gospel song "Use Your Faith"; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A woman of courage and compassion, she gave | ||
| generously to others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel | ||
| will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to share in her | ||
| life; and | ||
| WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, | ||
| and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by | ||
| her family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, | ||
| 83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the | ||
| bereaved family of Althea Lewis Renfro; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the | ||
| Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do | ||
| so in memory of Althea Renfro. | ||
