| Samuel Robert Sparks | ||
| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and | ||
| commemorates the life of Samuel Robert Sparks, who died December | ||
| 28, 2011, at the age of 83; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Sam Sparks was born December 24, 1928, in | ||
| Halleyville, Alabama; his family moved to Santa Rosa, Texas, when | ||
| he was two years old; as a young man, he hitchhiked in the summer | ||
| to Alabama for railroad work; he embarked on a career in | ||
| agriculture when he began farming in 1945; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Sparks married the love of his life, Seanne | ||
| Busch, in 1948; the couple enjoyed 63 years of marriage together | ||
| and raised four children, Elizabeth, Karen, Bobby, and John; they | ||
| were blessed with 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; | ||
| and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Sparks served his community with distinction | ||
| through his work on the boards of numerous agricultural and civic | ||
| organizations, including the Valley Farm Bureau, the Valley | ||
| Acres Irrigation District, and the Santa Rosa Independent School | ||
| District; he was a director of the San Antonio branch of the | ||
| Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and the First National Bank of | ||
| Harlingen; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Sparks was president and chief executive | ||
| officer of the Progresso Bridge and enjoyed taking an active role | ||
| in its daily operation; respected for his highly successful | ||
| career and community leadership, he is listed in the 1965 edition | ||
| of Outstanding Young Men of America and was a runner-up for the | ||
| Outstanding Young Farmer of Texas; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced his faith in his | ||
| daily life, he was a longtime member of Eighth and Harrison | ||
| Church of Christ in Harlingen; he was a trustee of the Valley | ||
| Baptist Medical Center and Abilene Christian University; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and integrity, he gave | ||
| unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, his generous spirit, and | ||
| his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be | ||
| forgotten; and | ||
| WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and | ||
| grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured | ||
| forever by his family and countless friends; now, therefore, be | ||
| it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, | ||
| 83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the | ||
| bereaved family of Samuel Robert Sparks; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
| Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
| memory of Sam Sparks. | ||
