| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
| recognize Sergio Alberto Tinoco for his commitment to public | ||
| service and his success in the face of great adversity; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Sergio Tinoco was born in Pharr, Texas, while his | ||
| mother, a resident of Reynosa, Mexico, was visiting her parents; | ||
| he spent his early years with his mother in Reynosa, and at | ||
| the age of six, he moved to his grandparents' home in Weslaco, | ||
| Texas; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Sergio began working as a migrant farmworker at | ||
| the young age of seven; by the age of 17, he was balancing his | ||
| academics and two jobs during high school, yet he graduated in | ||
| the top 10 percent of his class; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Determined to break a family cycle of poverty and | ||
| migrant work, Sergio joined the United States Army; he served in | ||
| Bosnia-Herzegovina in the aftermath of the Bosnian War and earned | ||
| numerous commendations, and he retired after 10 years of | ||
| distinguished service; he went on to have a successful career as | ||
| a United States Border Patrol agent, and during his tenure, he | ||
| has carried out his duties in the face of numerous challenging | ||
| and dangerous circumstances; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Sergio has shared his story of perseverance in his | ||
| award-winning book, Proud American: The Migrant, Soldier, and | ||
| Agent; the compelling memoir chronicles his journey from a young, | ||
| first-generation American struggling to learn English to a proud | ||
| patriot who built a life of purpose and who found success in spite | ||
| of a difficult background; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Sergio Tinoco is a beloved husband and father and | ||
| a cherished member of his community; he exemplifies the highest | ||
| ideals of public service, and his strength and resilience will | ||
| continue to inspire others long into the future; now, therefore, | ||
| be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th | ||
| Legislature, hereby commend Sergio Alberto Tinoco on his many | ||
| accomplishments and congratulate him on the exceptional success | ||
| of his memoir; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. | ||
