| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
| recognize the Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and | ||
| Scholarships and its board members, staff, and volunteers on the | ||
| occasion of the organization's 15th anniversary and its golf cup | ||
| tournament; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Founded in 1996 by business and civic leaders, the | ||
| Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships, | ||
| known as VAMOS, was created in response to a need to improve | ||
| educational opportunities for Hispanics in the Rio Grande | ||
| Valley; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The organization strives to provide promising | ||
| Valley students with four-year scholarships to pursue a | ||
| postsecondary education; by offering financial assistance and | ||
| mentoring to students of Hidalgo, Starr, and Cameron Counties, | ||
| the organization hopes to decrease the dropout rate of area | ||
| Hispanic students and increase interest in higher education; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Since its inception, the organization has raised | ||
| over $14 million and has awarded hundreds of students with | ||
| four-year scholarships to the college or university of their | ||
| choice; volunteers serve as mentors to scholarship recipients, | ||
| and recipients are monitored throughout their education; and | ||
| WHEREAS, In celebration of the organization's 15th | ||
| anniversary, it is sponsoring its 15th annual VAMOS Golf | ||
| Tournament on March 5, 2011; attendees will be contributing to | ||
| the organization's goals, thus providing support for the | ||
| educational opportunities for the Hispanic youth of the Rio | ||
| Grande Valley; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd | ||
| Legislature, hereby commend the Valley Alliance of Mentors for | ||
| Opportunities and Scholarships for helping young Hispanics to | ||
| acquire a higher education and extend best wishes to its members on | ||
| the occasion of its 15th annual golf tournament; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor | ||
| of the Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships. | ||
